INEC Chairman expressed decisive steps ahead of the election date

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu says the Commission will not be discouraged from conducting transparent and credible elections next year.

Professor Mahmood stated this against the background of attacks on the commission’s offices in Ogun and Osun States.

Speaking during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, the INEC Chairman expressed worry that if no urgent and decisive steps were taken, the attacks would intensify ahead of the election date.

The INEC boss was quoted as saying a peaceful campaign heralds a peaceful election and stressed the need to take steps to stem the trend.

He said henceforth activities involving the fifteen Registration Areas (Wards) and four hundred and forty/five Polling Units in Abeokuta South Local Government Area will be coordinated from the new location in Oke-Ilewo.

Similarly, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State has been directed to compile the Voter Identification Numbers of the sixty-five thousand six hundred and ninety-nine65, Permanent Voters Cards lost in the attack from their database and submit the record for immediate reprint.

INEC assured affected registered voters in Abeokuta South that no one will be disenfranchised as a result of the act.
