Two people have died and tens of thousands of households left without power after a magnitude six point four earthquake rocked northern California.

The tremor has also caused widespread damage to roadways.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake spawned up to eighty smaller quakes between magnitude four point six and two point five.

Authorities have closed several roads and warned the public to brace for aftershocks.
