FEC approves compulsory mother tongue instruction in primary schools.

Federal Executive Council has approved a new National Language Policy which makes mother tongue a compulsory medium of instruction from primary 1  to 6

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu made this known while briefing journalists at the end of the weekly FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said despite implementation challenges that will be faced, mother tongue would be the only medium of instruction for the first 6 years of education, combined with English, starting from secondary school.

Mallam Adamu said though the policy has officially taken effect, it would be fully implemented after government developed instructional materials and qualified teachers are available.
