Federal government blames states for deforestation

Federal government has blamed ongoing deforestation across the country on state governments and other powerful interest groups who protect loggers that produce charcoal for sale.

Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdulahi, who made this known in Abuja, disclosed that each time the federal government moves against the menace to save the environment, there was always push back at the sub-national level on the ground that the trees belong to states.

He said no administration has tackled the issue of felling of trees like the Buhari administration, noting that government is faced with the challenge of engaging Nigerian Governors Forum because of the Land Use Act.

The Minister added that federal government is just a policy provider and does not have control over state government land to work out a modality.
