Members of Bayelsa State House of Assembly have approved the sum of four billion naira requested by Governor Douye Diri as implementation of the Government Special Intervention Support for flood relief.
The fund is for beneficiaries of the Flood Mitigation Cash Transfer Social Support Scheme spread across the eight local government areas as selected from data provided by State Emergency Management Agency, Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development and that of Budget and Economic Planning.
The intervention is aimed at complementing measures already taken by government to bring succour to the people and to cushion devastating aftermath of flood on the livelihood of the people and damage to significant infrastructure.
Speaking on the approval, Leader of the House, Mr Monday Bubou-Obolo said Governor Diri’s request is not a loan to any commercial bank or from an agency but it is an approval within the budget.
Mr Obolo also noted that the fund is to alleviate the sufferings of farmers who are finding it difficult to continue with the farming business due to the flood that ravaged farmlands and destroyed crops.
In another development, the House has adjoined plenary till twenty-first of next month to enable members carry on with their campaigns ahead of the election.
