The people of Koluama Clan in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area have expressed displeasure over a crude oil spillage at its territory and call for intervention by Continental Oil and Gas Limited (CONOIL).
The spillage at Sangana Community is due to equipment failure owned by the company.
Speaking to Newsmen during an on the spot assessment of the area, representative of the Koluama clan Traditional Rulers leadership, Chief Nathan Francis said the people are appealing to the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, Federal Ministry of Environment, the Bayelsa state Government and other relevant agencies to seek for immediate clean up and other forms of remediation.
He called on them to as a matter of urgency prevail on CONOIL to save the livelihood of inhabitants by intervening to cushion the effect of the spillage.
According to him, a similar thing occurred in January last year and letters were written to authorities but nothing was done by Continental oil and gas Limited to cushion the negative effect till date.
Chief Nathan expressed displeasure over the company’s non responsive attitude whenever such incidents occur, urging them to maintain a good relationship with their host communities.
