Governor Douye Diri has promised to support any initiative to enhance the capacity of legal practitioners in Bayelsa State.
Governor Diri made the pledge when President of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Akpata, paid a courtesy visit on him in Government House, Yenagoa.
He applauded the NBA President for the initiative to go round branches of the Association nationwide to know their challenges.
While commending Mr. Akpata’s vision for capacity building for lawyers, the Governor said a basic problem of the judiciary was training and retraining and pledged to support any training initiative.
In response to a request that Courts be also provided in rural areas apart from the state capital for easy access to justice, Governor Diri said the challenge was not in building the facilities but ensuring the security of the judges.
Earlier, NBA President, Mr. Olumide Akpata had commended Governor Diri for the relationship between his administration and the judiciary.
Mr. Akpata said the feedback from lawyers indicated that they are taken care of and pledged the support of the bar for the administration.
He noted that his visit was to get in touch with members and know their challenges with a view to proffering solutions.
The NBA President stressed the need for government lawyers to undergo training and retraining to be abreast with current trends in the profession.
