NCDC reports rise in diphtheria infection

A report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has
revealed that at least three hundred and eighty-nine persons have been
infected with diphtheria with sixty two deaths this year.
The report revealed that Kano leads with three hundred and seventy-seven
cases; followed by Lagos with seven; Yobe two; while Katsina, Osun, and
Kaduna reported one case each.
They noted that only sixty out of the three hundred and eighty-nine
confirmed cases were fully vaccinated with a Diphtheria toxin-containing
vaccine.
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium species that
affects the nose, throat and, sometimes, the skin.
