Nigeria Immigration Service, Bayelsa State Command apprehends illegal immigrants

Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Bayelsa State Command, have apprehended scores of illegal immigrants in the state.

The command said the arrest, sanctioned by the Comptroller-General, Muhammad Babandede is to check alleged improper travel documents, residence cards and permits.

Among those arrested by the NIS, in the exercise meant to investigate foreign nationals and expatriates working within the state, are Nigerians, Togolese and Ghanaians.

Comptroller of NIS, Bayelsa Command, Mr. Sunday James, while speaking to journalists at the command headquarters in Yenagoa, said the alleged illegal immigrants in their custody are being screened and provided opportunity to defend themselves with verifiable evidence.

Mr. James said Operators of Bureau-de-change and key stakeholders were briefed on the exercise and it was conducted with high level of civility and respect for fundamental Human Rights.

He added that Operatives of the NIS have also being deployed to coastal communities and local Government council headquarters to flush out illegal immigrants.
